What is mindfulness meditation?
Learning to manage stress effectively is one of the most valuable skills a person can master for leading a happy, healthy, and authentic life. Evidence-based research supports the claim that mindfulness meditation can significantly reduce stress and enhance overall well-being.
“Mindfulness” is a modern translation of the word sati in Pali, a language native to India during the time of the Buddha, and can be roughly translated to English as presence of mind or clear awareness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a biologist whose pioneering research of mindfulness in stress reduction which helped pave the way for its mainstream popularity, defines mindfulness as: awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. When we practice mindfulness meditation, this awareness is what we cultivate.
