What is mindfulness meditation?

“Mindfulness” is a modern translation of the word sati in Pali, a language native to India during the time of the Buddha, and can be roughly translated as presence of mind or clear awareness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a biologist whose pioneering research of mindfulness in stress reduction which helped pave the way for its mainstream popularity, defines mindfulness as: awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. When we practice mindfulness meditation, this awareness is what we cultivate.

Taking the time to cultivate non-judgemental awareness of our present-moment internal or external experience through mindful attention has been shown to offer both immediate and long-term benefits. With sustained practice, mindfulness can encourage stress reduction and pain management, increase our self-empathy and empathy for others, enhance our ability to self-regulate, improve focus and concentration, and more.

Give it a try!

I currently offer instruction in mindfulness meditation for individuals and groups via Zoom or FaceTime. Sessions typically run for 45 minutes to allow time for a brief check-in, lecture, guided practice and closing discussion. Sessions are currently offered by donation, with a suggested donation of $20-30. If you cannot meet the suggested donation, please give from the heart what you are able. Please view my accepted payment methods.
