What is mindfulness meditation?

“Mindfulness” is a modern translation of the word sati in Pali, a language native to India during the time of the Buddha, and can be roughly translated as presence of mind or clear awareness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a biologist whose pioneering research of mindfulness in stress reduction which helped pave the way for its mainstream popularity, defines mindfulness as: awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. When we practice mindfulness meditation, this awareness is what we cultivate.

Taking the time to cultivate non-judgemental awareness of our present-moment internal or external experience through mindful attention has been shown to offer both immediate and long-term benefits. With sustained practice, mindfulness can encourage stress reduction and pain management, increase our self-compassion and empathy for others, enhance our ability to self-regulate, improve focus and concentration, and more.
